The Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS), founded in August l951, is the highest medical research institution of the Chinese People"s Liberation Army (PLA). The Academy is org- anized into research institutes: Institute of Medical Information. Institute of Radiation Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Institute of Hygiene & Environmental Medicine, Institute of Microbiology & Epidemiology, Institute of Pharmacology & Toxicology, Institute of Medical Equipment and Institute of Bioengineering. In addition, there are some other subordinate units such as Affiliated Hospital, Experimental Instrument Plant and Laboratory Animal Center. With a large group of senior scientists and technologists, including 4 academicians of the Chinese Acad- emy of Sciences (CAS) and 4 academicians of the
Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), AMMS is mainly engaged in the researches on the medical protection against extreme environments and special injuries in peace and war time, the sanitary and antiepidemic technology and equipment, as well as their relevant bases.
After more than 40 years of construction and development, AMMS has become a multidisciplinary and comprehensive medical research institution with about 20 cross-disciplinary research centers and key laboratories such as the National Center for Biomedical Analysis, the National Center for New Drug Nonclinical Safety Evaluation (GUP laboratory), the National Base for Clinical Pharmaco- logy, the Army Research Center for Preventive Medicine, and the Army Emergency Medical Aid Center for Nuclear Accidents, The Academy has undertaken and completed a number of important research projects assigned by the Army and the State, and earned about 1500 awards for research achievements.
AMMS, as a cradle for scientists and technologists in the field of military medical sciences, currently has 15 specialities to offer Doctor"s degree and 25 to offer Master"s degree, with pathophysiology, pharmacology and biochemistry as the State key specialities. The Academy has set up 3 postdoctoral circulating centers for pharmacy, basic medicine and preventive medicine, and cultivated large number of graduates for Doctor"s degree or Master"s degree. Now it has established academic relations with dozens of domestic and overseas counterparts.
AMMS is an important base in transforming research achievements into practical applications. Relying on its hi-tech advantages, the Academy has established a series of new hi-tech enterprises with emphasis on the research and development of drugs, biological products and health care products. So far, a large number of hi-tech achievements and products have walked into the society, and some even into the international markets, which have made greater social and economic profits.
AMMS, with unity and confidence toward the 21st century, will keep forging ahead and strive for the modernization of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences.
